simple indulgence: cozy sleep remedy

After a pretty hectic day celebrating Easter with the fam, I came home and took a few moments to unwind before calling it an early night.

But if you're anything like me - a hopeless insomniac - a 9pm "bedtime" turns into hours and hours of watching television, listening to soft music, surfing the Internet, etc. -  and 9pm quickly turns into midnight, or even later.

I've started the following "remedy" a few weeks ago, and I have to say, it works like a charm.  I drink it right after I climb into bed - before I know it, I'm nodding off, entering blissful dreamland.  An added bonus?  I wake up the next day, feeling super refreshed!

Here's what you need (of course, feel free to substitute brands below with what you prefer...)

1 cup of lowfat milk (2%)
1 tsp. vanilla
1.5 tsp. cinnamon*
1 tablespoon of honey*
dash of lowfat half and half

*or, to taste

Oh, and of course, a small saucepan and your favorite mug...

What you'll do
1.  In your saucepan, combine milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
2.  Bring to a boil.
3.  Lower heat to a simmer and add honey.
4.  Stir until honey melts.
5.  Add a dash of half and half.
6.  Bring back up to a slow boil.  (I like mine to be hot so its warmed by the time I'm ready to drink...)
7.  Turn off heat and pour into mug.
8.  Stir and enjoy!

Suggestions/Alternative methods:
  • I prefer lowfat milk - the dash of half and half just gives this drink a slightly creamy feel.  With whole milk, you can totally eliminate the half and half.
  • I would NOT substitute the honey with sugar or agave.  I've tried it and for some reason, it doesn't give me the same drowsy effect.
  •  You can add the honey to your mug, then add the hot milk/vanilla/cinnamon/half and half combo.  The heat from the milk melts the honey naturally - just be ready for a slightly sweeter drink.
  • I think this goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway:  DO NOT consume before driving or doing anything that would be affected by drowsiness.

This is a simple ritual that you can add to your nightly routine...I definitely look forward to it on an especially crazy day - it almost takes no time at all.

Happy sleeping!

simplistically yours,
xoxo andrea
